Description
Introduction Exports can be divided into two main groups, namely: traditional and non-traditional exports. Ghana's traditional exports are predominately raw materials or primary commodities and comprise commodities--cocoa, timber, gold and electricity. Non-traditional products are all other export products such as horticultural products, textiles, fishery products, wood products and handicrafts. This sector is considered a major means for poverty alleviation as it has great potential for job creation and income generation, especially in the rural communities in Ghana. In regard to income generation, the non-traditional export sector, for instance, earned a total of US $671.11 million, representing 57.6 % of the total export revenue for Ghana in 2007 (Spectator, April 19, 2008, p.22).
